Littlies celebrate Arbor Day

The Grade R pupils at Atholl Heights Primary School planted a Bridelia Micanthra for Arbor Day.

THE Grade R classes at Atholl Heights Primary School celebrated Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony on Wednesday 3 September.

They planted a Bridelia Micanthra, the coastal golden leaf. It is a fast growing indigenous shade tree with scattered bright red leaves. It is non-poisonous and the berries it produces are edible. This was an important criteria for the school as the tree was planted in the Grade R play area.

Earlier in the week the children were taught about the importance of trees to the planet, and coloured in pictures of the national tree.

The task of watering and feeding the tree has been given to the Grade R pupils to encourage ongoing interest in their Arbor Day efforts.
