Sea Dog gets a happy ending

A Durban dog rescued from the sea as found a loving home.

Sea Dog, as he is affectionately known, has landed with his feet in the butter after being rescued out of the sea in Durban on Sunday, 31 August.

The black greyhound  was spotted far out at sea by a vessel that takes supplies to the ships waiting to dock in the harbour. Skipper Quinton Shooter at first thought it was a seal but on closer inspection realised it was a dog in desperate trouble.

The crew decided to rescue him and wasted no time in making a harness and hoisting the exhausted animal onto the boat despite the massive sea swells.

The owner of the boat Lamont Hitchings took the terrified, tired dog home with him and contacted Project Dog for help.

Kim Samuels from Project Dog said, “Those men are the real heroes, they deserve all the credit for going out of their way to save this dog.”

He was taken to Dr Kerry Easson for a check up which revealed the hard life he had been living.

“He had a rope burn around his neck which indicated he had been tied up and he has battle scars on his body. We have no idea and don’t even want to imagine how he came to be in the sea!”

The good news for Sea Dog was that Dr Easson has decided to keep him.

“We have so many rescue dogs just like Sea Dog who have had hard lives that deserve to find good homes. We have lots of dogs that we have rescued and rehabilitated that deserve a second chance.”
