Protesters burn tyres in New Germany

Bus Rapid Transport system put on hold once again by protesters.

PROTESTERS burnt tyres in the corner of Shepstone and Otto Volek Road in New Germany early on Thursday morning blocking the road.

Metro Police had to divert the traffic and guide the situation.

Mfana Qwabe of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) said there were talks between them and the councillors but the response they received was not sufficient.

“We are not happy, we were told that 83 general workers have been in this project but only 28 from Ward 18 and 16 from Ward 21.

“The others do not reside in this area, there is even one person from Pietermaritzburg.

Qwabe added that they been informed that officials from eThekwini Municipality will address the community on Sunday 14 September about the project.

“There were also talks that it will not only be the councillors involved in this project but also PR councillors.

Ward 21 councillor, Bongani Gumede said they have tried to liaise with the protesters with no success.

“We can not employ all of them, but they are demanding to all be employed which is impossible.

“There are many people out there who are also unemployed, that means we will have to hire them also when they decide to go on strike and destroy property,” said Gumede.
