UKZN student protests continue

It remains unclear whether or not lectures at the university's campuses will resume today.

A student protest at the Westville campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal  seems to be continuing, as students at the university’s Edgewood campus in Pinetown failed to show up for lectures this morning.

Last week the Highway Mail reported on a protest at the Westville campus which was allegedly prompted by a financial dispute, with  students complaining about an increase in the university’s registration fees.

On Tuesday students at the Westville campus had to be doused with water cannons by the police when they allegedly embarked on a rowdy protest, setting fire to rubbish bins and tyres and hurling projectiles like bottles and stones.

Social media posts from students at the university suggest the protest continues today.

The strike seems to have spilled over to the Edgewood campus in Pinetown, where students apparently failed to show up for lectures this morning.

A source at the Edgewood campus confirmed that there was low-key protest action at the campus this morning, though it remains unclear whether or not lectures will resume today as comment from the university has been unavailable.

Earlier this year dozens of students were arrested for public violence during a strike at the Edgewood campus.

There have also been reports of brewing protest action at the university’s Howard College campus in Glenwood.
