Horse Care appeals for hay for skinny mare

This pregnant mare needs good quality hay to help get her back into condition.

The Coastal Horse Care Unit in Cato Ridge is appealing for good quality erogrostis hay or teff to help nurse an emaciated, pregnant Throughbred mare.

The Coastal team discovered the mare at a rural clinic held on Saturday, 16 August in the Rietvlei area near Mooi River.

Being an older mare and a Throughbred she was not coping in her current environment and the owner agreed to sign her over to the Unit.

She was brought back to the farm on Monday, 18 August where it is hoping she will start picking up weight before the birth of her foal.

As she has not been on any concentrated horse food where she was, concentrates have to be introduced slowly to prevent her colicking, hence the need for plenty of good quality hay.
