Husky Rescue KZN alive and well

Help Husky Rescue KZN with donations, time or adopting a dog.

Husky Rescue KZN, also known as Lebanon ARROHHH (Association for the Rescue and Rehabilitation of Humans, Huskies and Horses) has many beautiful huskies looking for good homes.

The charity organisation moved to larger facilities in Cato Ridge about 18 months ago and according to Charnell Ruth of Husky Rescue KZN it “has been a godsend.”

The organisation that is instrumental in rescuing and rehabilitating stray and abandoned huskies and taking in huskies that owners can no longer keep or afford, almost had to close its doors down a couple of years ago when they could no longer operate from their Gillitts premises but thankfully with the new, bigger facilities and a renewed public awareness in the charity, things are starting to look up again.

“With our new Facebook page – Husky Rescue KZN – we have had 700 likes which is about 100 new likes a months so we are making better progress,” explained Charnell.

Charnell is very particular about the homing of the huskies and strict procedures have to be adhered to. Application forms are filled in by prospective adoptees and home checks are carried about before any dogs are rehomed. Charnell helps with the settling in of the dogs and the introduction to the family’s other dogs and if for some reason the home doesn’t work out, the dogs are returned to the centre.

“It is important for new owners to have an understanding about the breed. They are excellent escape artists with a spirit of adventure. They are also very active and sociable and thrive on love and attention.”

The ideal candidate should have a large, well fenced property and be able to take the dog for long walks or runs and have the time to spend quality time with them. Huskies can be difficult with small animals and cats so preferably owners should have larger, well socialised dogs or other Huskies if they are planning to introduce a Husky into a home that already has dogs.

If a family is approved to adopt a dog, an adoption contract has to be signed and an adoption fee of R1000 is payable up front which includes sterilisation, micro-chipping, vaccinations and deworming.

If you are unable to adopt a dog but would like to help out, the organisation has many ways that you can be of assistance. It costs about R15,000 a month to feed and deworm the 34 dogs that are presently in their care and that is without flea and tick treatment and veterinary bills.

Ways of helping out:

1. Sms “Donate HRKZN” to 48748 to donate R10 to the organisation.

2. Join their R50 a month food drive which goes towards covering the food bills. Reference “Food drive and your name” to account: The Lebanon ARROHHH, Bank: First National Bank, account number: 62227535913, branch code: 223726.

3. Sponsor, foster or adopt a Husky.

4. Donate old blankets, towels, linen, collars, dog beds, bowls, toys, dry and tin food.

5. Tell others about Husky Rescue KZN or like, share and comment on their Facebook page. The more exposure, the more potential supporters and homes.

6. Volunteer to help out at the centre. The dogs love social interaction with people, grooming and walks.

“We would love to get schools and companies interested in community service to come and visit us and help out,” said Charnell.
