St Mary’s choir sings for gold

The St Mary's DSG high school choir wins two medals at the World Choir Games, held in Europe.

THE St Mary’s High School choir excelled during their recent performances at the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia in Europe.

The 37 pupils took part in two categories, Scenic Pop and Equal Voices. Hard work and dedication secured a silver and a gold medal for the pupils, in the respective categories. These were both open categories and not the champion categories.

Leading up to the competition, the choir performed in churches, town squares and even on the trams and buses as they travelled around the city.

“The girls were received enthusiastically wherever they went. The standard of the World Choir Games is very high and with so many choirs competing from all over the world, the interpretation and expectation of the judges is difficult to gauge accurately,” said Lindy van der Meulen, conductor.

The St Mary’s choir recently showcased their international winning talent while performing at Makaranga’s Music in the Hills. It is hoped that South Africa will host the World Choir Games in 2018.
