Garden fork robbers arrested

Authorities believe that they have arrested the men who held up and threatened an elderly Pinetown couple with a garden fork.

POLICE arrested two men who are believed to be involved in several house robberies in the Pinetown area, on Thursday, 7 August.

The two men, aged 18 and 21, were arrested in Mariannhill by members of the SAPS Railway Mobile Unit after police received a tip-off regarding their whereabouts.

During the arrest authorities seized three vehicles that were reported stolen after the house robberies occurred.

According to Lt Bongumuso Manqele, the communications officer at the Pinetown SAPS, the seized vehicles enabled authorities to link the men to the house robbery in Farningham Ridge, where an elderly couple was tied up and robbed on Wednesday, 23 July.

The robbers were allegedly armed with a firearm and a garden fork. They overpowered the couple’s gardener before entering their home.

It was reported that the two robbers spent nearly an hour in the couple’s home. One of the robbers reportedly held the gun against the man’s head as the other robber ransacked the home. Later the robbing duo fled the scene in the couple’s vehicle.

Manqele confirmed that police also linked the two men to a robbery that occurred on Monday, 4 August, where a 78-year-old man was held up in his home in Highland Hills. Two vehicles and a television were stolen.

The men appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday 8 August, on charges of house robbery. Their case was postponed and the two men will appear in court on Tuesday, 19 August for their formal bail hearing.
