SIXTEEN people were arrested in the Mariannhill area when police embarked on a crime operation to commemorate women’s month.

THE Chatsworth SAPS Cluster initiated an integrated cluster operation in Marianhill headed by Brigadier Keerith Nunkumar, SAPS Chatsworth cluster commander.

According to Mariannhill SAPS communications officer, Cpt Marcelino Harold, the crime operation was dubbed “operation massive clean up”.

“The operation targeted wanted suspects; drug dealers, illegal shebeens, illegal firearms and stolen motor vehicles.

“Metro police, the Road Traffic Inspectorate, the dog unit and the flying squad were also part of the operation,” said Harold.

All the “hot spots” were targeted and the various drug dens and illegal shebeens raided. Taxi ranks were cordoned off and taxis and drivers searched.

“Numerous road traffic offences were also dealt with.

“Both station commanders Brigadier Nundkumar and Col Madonsela were pleased with the results of the operation and commended the members for their hard work.

“They promised the public that the crime operations were ongoing and different policing areas will be targeted,” he said.

Cpt Harold also warned criminals that their illegal activities will not be tolerated and people can rest assured that the police are committed to dealing with crime and asked for the continued support from the community.
