Striking continues in Westmead

Workers will march to the Durban City Hall on Friday if their demands are not met.

Members of the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (Sactwu) and the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (Giwusa) have said they will not back down until they get their 10 per cent increase from their employers.

The protesters include workers from BSN Medical Aid and BEIER in Westmead, and Frame Polypropylene in New Germany.

Shop steward, Themba Mthembu said they want employees to sign a two year agreement deal.

““We want a 10 per cent package, and in this 7.8 per cent they are offering us, it includes 1 per cent for provident fund, night shift allowance, HIV/AIDS funds and long service award.

“If the employers continue to ignore us we will march to the Durban City Hall on Friday,” said Mthembu.

The strike is on its eighth day and workers said they will continue to strike outside the companies’ gates until their demands are met.
