Caitlyn raises hope

Benjamin Pine Primary School have chosen Caitlyn Nel, an altruistic Grade 6 pupil as their July Spar Star.

GOODWILL and self-sacrifice were the terms fellow pupils and staff the Benjamin Pine Primary School used to define Grade 6 pupil, Caitlyn Nel, who has spent countless hours volunteering and raising funds for the Hope House orphanage in Pinetown.

The 12-year-old philanthropist has been chosen as the school’s Spar Star of the Month. Last year Caitlyn managed to raise R20 000 for the non-profit organisation (NPO) and this year she is hoping to double that amount.

She is raising the funds by selling tickets for a local theatre production. When she is not occupying her time with fundraising or focusing on her education, Caitlyn helps out at the Hope House, by doing stock take or caring for the babies at the home.

“I try and help out at least twice a week. It was sad to see that these babies do not have parents, and although they get lots of love and attention from the staff at the Hope House, I think it is important to help out. The babies are so cute, and I enjoy helping take care of them,” she said.

Additionally, Caitlyn and her mom also spends time fostering some of the babies at the orphanage.
