Police warn of cellphone scam

If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

HILLCREST SAPS has warned people to be aware of the latest cellphone scam.

According to Lt France Mkhize, Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, a Hillcrest resident received a call from a man who identified himself as Mr Mkhize from IVC containers company.

“The man told him that they were conducting a promotion for cellphones and the resident has won two cellphones, a Blackberry and a Samsung.

“The victim was told that she had to deposit R250 at Capitec Bank for administration fees and was given an account number.

Mkhize said the victim started getting suspicious when she realised that the account was not in the company’s name but a personal account for Miss VW Chamane.

“The next day, Mr Mkhize called her enquiring about the money and this time he sounded agitated.

“The victim received another call from a woman who said her name was Ms Maphumulo calling from Pep Store, asking her to deposit the money in the same account for the victim to receive her phones,” said Mkhize.

The scammers were using two cellphone numbers 073 191 3546 and 078 0900712.

“The name of the company was googled and it was established that it was an overseas company not based in South Africa,” he said.

Mkhize added that people must be vigilant as this incident followed few reports made to the police about people operating in the upper highway pretending to be Eskom employees who robbed people once they gain entry into the house.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour and individuals must contact police on 031 765 9103/34.
