Driver responds to M7 crash

The driver of the bakkie involved in the "Bakkie smashes into VW Polo" article last week, speaks out.

FOLLOWING last week’s report where a bakkie crashed into a VW Polo and two people were injured, the driver of the bakkie has responded.

Jacques Roux, the driver of the bakkie, said he was travelling on the M7 and was headed to the Bluff when the accident occurred.

“There is a blind rise and as I rose above it I saw the Blue VW in the slow lane. I was also in the slow lane and driving at about 100km/h, so I checked my blind spot in me right side mirror and there was already a car in the fast lane so I couldn’t move over,” said Roux.

He noted that the VW was not moving and had come to a standstill in the slow lane. He said there was no indication that the vehicle was not moving.

“It was parked. There were no hazards on, no triangle to say that it had broken down and there was definitely nobody flagging motorists down,” said Roux.

He said by the time he looked back after checking his blind spot he had hit the back of the VW Polo.

“The Polo only rolled up the embankment because the car was stopped with it’s wheels turned to the left and the force of impact pushed it upwards,” said Roux.

The passenger was seriously injured and was removed from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life while the driver of the car was slightly wounded and had whiplash.

Roux said he had a hairline fracture on his collarbone and bruises from the seat belt. The damage to his vehicle was an estimated R100 000.

“To all the people that stopped at the scene, thank you so much. They were all very helpful. I feel sorry for what happened and after the accident I kept thinking that there might have been something different that I could have done,” said Roux.
