Mandela Day fosters pride and activism

Motala Heights residents spent their 67 minutes on Mandela Day cleaning up their community.

PRIDE swelled in the hearts of Motala Heights residents as they spent their 67 minutes on Mandela Day, Friday, 18 July, cleaning up their community.

Young and old rallied to pick up rubbish that has been littering their neighbourhood. The toddlers, who were too young to assist with the cleanup was entertained with stories and a book orientation.

Residents gathered at the Motala Heights Library, where food parcels, books and clothing, that were donated by various Highway organisations, were handed out after the cleanup. “Every year we partner with community members to assist the underprivileged people in the area. This year, on Mandela Day, we partnered with community activist, Shamitha Naidoo,” said Allois Luthuli, a library staff representative.

The Motala Heights Senior Citizen’s Club knitted several scarves, which they donated to the cause.
“Many residents from the area live in extreme poverty. Some of the residents don’t even have a physical address and therefore cannot enrol as a member of the library and have difficulty in borrowing and accessing books. Through this project we not only hope to provide the residents with a sense of pride, but also with some food and books to share the knowledge,” said Luthuli.
