MEETINGS

HIGHWAY Branch of the Wildlife and Environment Society meets at the Westville Central Library on Friday 11 July, at 7.30pm. Guest speaker, Logan Govender of the Astronomical Society will talk about and present photographs of the rare phenomena know as The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. In addition, weather and cloud cover permitting, the society will have the opportunity to view the night sky through the society’s telescopes. All welcome, light refreshments served at no charge. However donations are welcome.

BIRDLIFE Port Natal will meet at the Westville Methodist Church on Wednesday 9 July at 7pm for a Photographic Revelation evening. Members will share what they have learnt about birds through photography. Contact Lesley on 083 231 3408.

THE KwaZulu-Natal branch of the South African Military History Society’s will meet at UKZN’s Murray Theatre at the Department of Civil Engineering on Howard College campus on Thursday 10 July at 7pm. The 25-minute Darrell Hall Memorial lecture will be entitled, John Cummings’ ride and the attack on Fort Peddie by Prof David Walker and the main talk will be delivered by Roy Bowman, titled Guadalcanal-The Follow On. DR Claire Burke, astrophysicist at UKZN, will present a talk entitled Science and Spirituality at the Durban Unitarian Fellowship service, this Sunday 13 July at 10am. Fellowship. Dr Burke will explore and share her personal journey from research to religion and divinity. The service is at 1 Baden Road in Westville. All are welcome, irrespective of religious affiliation. Tea will be served after the service.

LEARN to meditate and discover the joy of an open heart at the Mahasiddha Buddhist Centre, 6 Hamilton Crescent in Gillitts, on Sunday 13 July from 9.30am to 12.30pm. In this helpful morning meditation course, you will learn simple breathing meditation practices that give you the power to overcome disturbing thoughts and to stay focused on what brings peace to mind. SOUTH African Association of Retired Persons (SAARP) Pinetown branch will meet at the Bethany Gardens, Hoogvoorst Road, in Pinetown on Wednesday 16 July from 9am. Entertainment by singer Belinda Dolphin. Tea/coffee and cake served at R20 each.

KLOOF Cancer Support Group will meet at Kloof Methodist Church, 4 Park Lane in Kloof on Thursday 17 July at 9.15am. .Guest speaker, Margaret van den Lenden will talk about Tape Aids for the Blind at 10am. SOUTH African Writers’ Circle will meet at the Westville Library Room G3 on Saturday 19 July at 11am. The topic is The Art of Playwriting presented by prominent South Africa and Durban theatre personality Themi Venturas. Themi is a director of theatre, performance and entertainment events which he writes, produces and directs. He was head of productions at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, artistic director of the Catalina Theatre and is artistic and managing director at Themi Venturas Productions. A workshop will follow entitled, Playwriting in Practice, when writing skills will be applied by those attending. Visitors are welcome. Take along a plate of eats. EVENTS

PINETOWN Methodist Church is holding a Children’s Holiday Club from Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 July from 7.30am to 12pm. The club is open for all primary school children and entry is free. GO along to the guided walk at the Glenholme Nature Reserve, situated in the grounds of the Kloof and Highway SPCA, on Saturday 12 July at 10am. Easy walking, duration about one and a half hours. All welcome. Enjoy the offerings of the SPCA tea room before or after the walk.

SCHIZOPHRENIA Phrenaid invites all those living with schizophrenia, this includes those affected families, care givers and friends to go along to a bring and braai at Paradise Valley Nature Reserve on Saturday 12 July from 11am. Take along your own meat, cold drink and a salad. Cutlery, crockery, braai fire, rolls etc will be provided. Adults pay R13 each, children up to 16 years pay R9 each and pensioners pay R7 each.
