Kloof drug bust bumped down to R20-million

Initial reports that the drugs found in the Kloof home were valued at R3-billion have been found to be incorrect.

THE three men arrested for manufacturing drugs in a Kloof home appeared for the second time at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today.

Senior advocate, Waldo Smit, requested that the case be remanded until 18 July. The magistrate, Wendy Robinson, allowed the case date to be moved.

There was confusion as to whether journalists would be allowed in the courtroom after being told they would have to apply to attend the court case.

The three men entered the courtroom with their faces hidden. Two of them chose to cover their faces with a hoodie while the other chose to cover his face with a white towel.

“It is still early days as the investigations are still pending,” said advocate Nathi Mncube, national spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa.

He also noted that the drug bust was not as large as initially reported and the total amount of drugs average R20 million instead of the R3-billion  previously reported.

According to Mncube, 45kg of Methaqualone was found in a powdered form while another 2 000 litres of the base drug in Mandrax were confiscated in a liquid form.
