Cops arrest fraudster in Pinetown

A man was arrested after attempting to apply for a car in Pinetown with fraudulent documents.

A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Chatsworth was arrested for applying to purchase a vehicle with fraudulent documents.

According to Captain Thulani Zwane, media spokesman for the KZN SAPS, the Umlazi K9 currency detection unit made the arrest in Pinetown yesterday. “The man made an on-line application to purchase a vehicle at one of the Pinetown auto dealerships worth R135 323 using fabricated documents,” said Zwane. “When the fraudulent documents were received by the bank’s forensic investigation team, they contacted the Umlazi K9 currency detection.”

In a collaborated effort between them, the Provincial Crime Intelligence, the Pinetown Visible Policing and Amanzimtoti Task Team were able to track down the fraudster.

“The K9 members formulated a strategic plan to arrest the man when he went to collect his new vehicle at the auto dealer, after his purchase was endorsed. It is believed that the man acquired the false bank documents, with inflated figures, for him to get an approval from the bank to purchase a Corsa utility bakkie,” said Zwane.

The man was charged with fraud and is due to appear at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Friday 4 July.
