Hero husband shot in hijacking

A man was shot while rescuing his wife during a hijacking last night.

Justin Mackley was shot in his right arm in a hijacking that occurred in Cobbleset Lane, New Germany last night, Monday, 30 June.

His wife, Kristyl returned home at 5.50pm and opened the manual gate, drove her car through the gate and as she was closing the gate behind her she noticed a young man watching her.

She tried to shut the gate quickly but the man pushed the gate so hard that he derailed the gate.

She screamed for Justin and as he came running to see what was happening, the man grabbed Kristyl pushed her to the ground and climbed in the car.

Justin managed to pull the man out of the car through the open window and a scuffle ensued after which the man fled.

A second accomplice came running through the gate and fired a gun at Justin shooting him in the arm while a third accomplice jumped in the car and reversed it out the drive before making their escape.

Justin’s brother, Quinton who lives on the same property pushed the panic button and within minutes Blue Security and ProForce Security had responded.

Concerned neighbours who had heard the screaming also rallied around. One of the neighbours, an ex-paramedic, elevated Justin’s arm and attended to him until the ambulance arrived 15 minutes later.

He was transported to eThekwini Hospital for further treatment. X-rays revealed that the bullet missed his bones but further tests still need to be conducted to ensure no nerves or arteries have been compromised before a surgeon will remove the bullet.

Charges of carjacking and attempted murder are being investigated by the Pinetown SAPS. So far no arrests have been made.

The hijacked car is a white 2010 Corsa Essentia 1.4 (registration NPN 75042). If anyone sees the car please contact Pinetown SAPS on 031 325 5080/83 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

This x-ray shows the bullet lodged in Justin’s arm.
