Gillitts home goes up in smoke

A Gillitts family is in desperate need of donations following a devastating fire at the weekend.

A Stockville Road family is devastated by theĀ  loss of their home and belongings which were destroyed in a fire on Saturday, 21 June at around 5.30pm.

The family which consists of Nancy Govindasamy, her son, daughter, daughter-in-law and two granddaughters, six-years-old and six-months-old were out shopping when the fire occurred.

Their neighbour above them, Narath Singh saw the flames and smoke and called the fire station for assistance.

Before the Gillitts Fire Station could arrive and put out the fire, it had already completely destroyed the inner sections of the house and all its contents.

The family was contacted and rushed back home but could only watch in horror from the road as their house was engulfed in flames.

“I am really devastated. I am the sole supporter as the rest of my family are not working and I have worked all these years to build a life for myself and my family and now it is all gone,” said a tearful Nancy.

Her children and grandchildren are staying with their in-laws at the moment but this is only as a temporary solution as there is not enough space for them to remain there and Nancy would like to be back on her feet as soon as possible.

Her six-year-old granddaughter is a pupil at Gillitts Primary School but has not gone back to school yet as the family is still recovering from the shock. She has lost all her school items and clothing.

“If someone could donate a Wendy house or shed on my property that we could use as accommodation in the meantime that would be wonderful. We have lost everything so any clothes, food or donations would be very much appreciated,” said Nancy.

Councillor Rick Crouch who visited the site of the destruction said, “I have contacted Disaster Management on behalf of the family but the assistance given by the department is very limited. I am asking any community members who can assist the family to please do so.”

Nancy Govindasamy can be contacted directly on 072 368 6087 or Councillor Rick Crouch can be contacted on 073 418 6996. He will ensure the family receives any donations collected.
