St Mary’s wants to #BringBackOurGirls

St Mary's pupils have voiced their opinion on the captivity of the 200 Nigerian schoolgirls.

THE abduction of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls has shocked and saddened the pupils at St Mary’s DSG.

They have therefore embarked on an awareness campaign to protest against the captivity of the schoolgirls.

Lindy van der Meulen, choir mistress, said, “We are also a girls’ boarding school, and can only imagine the horror and anguish everyone in the Chibok region is experiencing.”

The St Mary’s DSG Choir has contributed to this campaign by recording a song from their World Choir Games programme entitled, “Freedom is Coming”.

Originally from the South African musical, entitled Sarafina!, the song was written to communicate the hope of the imminent release of the nation’s beloved Nelson Mandela from prison.

On 13 May, the school’s choir sang it in a new, but equally poignant context, to emphasise the necessity of the release of the Nigerian girls by the extreme Islamist group, Boko Haram.

The pupils and staff are aware that their actions are small, but are hopeful that it will contribute towards the release of the girls and their safe return.
