Two killed in police shootout

Two shot dead after an attempted hijacking.

TWO men were shot dead and three were arrested after a shoot-out with the police on Thursday evening.

According to Lt Bongumusa Manqele, Pinetown SAPS communications officer said the five men led Sydenham police officers and the Durban Dog Unit on a car chase following an attempted hijacking in Westville North .

“The police chased the would-be hijackers through M19, Blair Atholl and down to Clermont. When they got to Nipper Road in New Germany they lost control of the vehicle and hit a wall.

“One of the men came out of the car and started shooting at the police and the police returned fire,” he said.

Manqele said another man was shooting at the police from inside the car.

“The gunman shooting from outside the car ran to a nearby bush where he was shot dead, another man died inside the car and the other three were arrested.

It’s been  reported that the Volvo  used by these five men had been stolen in Pinetown earlier in the day by two men.

“One of the men that hijacked the car was among the two that died and the other one was arrested,” added Manqele.

A case of attempted murder, stolen property, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition was opened at the Pinetown Police Station.
