Muggers prey on Rossburgh pedestrians

Muggers terrorise people walking to Rossburgh testing grounds

BELLAIR SAPS reported a rise in the number of armed robberies in the Rossburgh area.

According to corporate communications officer for Bellair SAPS, Derick Vijiam, the men involved in these crimes mostly targeted people going to the Rossburgh testing grounds.

“The two young men who are attacking people in this area are allegedly operating in the early morning hours when it is still fairly dark, they are then returning in the afternoon before striking again in the evening. The majority of people who have reported cases are either on their way to the testing grounds or leaving them.”

The men said to be involved are in their early 20s and are well dressed and well spoken. They follow their victim at a distance for a while, walking apart from each other. One of them will then walk past the victim and make a sudden about-turn towards the victim while the other approaches from behind. A gun is then produced and shoved in the victim’s mouth before they demand valuables.

“A gun has been used in most of the attacks and victims have all given a similar description of the men. We have also noted that most victims were listening to music on their earphones when the attack happened. That in itself is a danger as it attracts these men. We urge people to be vigilant and to walk in groups. Winter is approaching and we are expecting another spike in muggings. Walking in large groups can deter would-be muggers,” added Vijiam.
