Dam drained as search for children continues

A bakkie full of school children crashed into a dam this morning.

The body of a fifth child has been recovered by rescue workers after a bakkie loaded with school children crashed into  farm dam near Mooi River this morning. The exact number of children who were on board the vehicle is still not known as the search is continues for children who have been reported missing by parents.

According to reports from KZN emergency services, most of the dam has been drained, but the bakkie remains trapped in the dam’s thick mud sediment. Initial attempts to have a TLB lift the bakkie failed.

The TLB is now being used to scoop the mud away from the bakkie and a high pressure water hose is being used to loosen the mud’s suction effect to try free the bakkie from the mud.

The number of children transported to hospital has been confirmed at 24 and not the 25 initially reported.

The search and rescue crews, especially those from the police, have been working tirelessly all day.

Farm machinery has been used to breach the dam wall and drain the water out of the dam and a police sniffer dog has now also been brought in to help search the water.

The canopy which has separated from the bakkie has been located and rescue efforts currently are being focussed in this area.
