Big boost for Fulton’s science lab

MySchool donated two portable labs to Fulton School for the Deaf recently.

FULTON School for the Deaf received two Portable Science Laboratories by the MySchool initiative.

This donation will enable the school to teach science more effectively, using the visual elements of the mobile lab as opposed to only relying on verbal teaching. In all schools seeing a science experiment is more beneficial to pupils, but for a deaf pupil visual is key and will remember results easily once they’ve seen them.

Named PortaLabs, these portable Natural Science laboratories have been developed with the quintile 1, 2 and 3 schools in mind where resources are scarce. The Mini PortaLabs are compact, weighing only 22 kg and making them easy to carry from classroom to classroom. It promotes team planning and team work, gets pupils involved, captures their imagination and makes science lessons more meaningful, turning theory into practice.

Developed by Plastic Engineering Solutions (PES), each lab contains all the basic science lab needs for a school and includes test tubes, chemicals, a ray box, prisms, cell holders, electrical connections, bulbs, magnets, petra dishes, dissecting scissors, magnifying glasses and carbon rods.

“The experiments performed, using these labs have enabled our deaf pupils to learn visually. Far greater understanding is achieved. We are truly grateful for the ongoing support we receive through the MySchool Programme,” said Beryl Campbell, the principal of Fulton School for the Deaf.

Anyone can sign up for a free MySchool card, which will benefit under-resourced schools all across South Africa.
