Greyhounds not stolen

A false alarm was raised on suspected stolen dogs in Westville.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA was called out to the Westville Mall after it was suspected that stolen dogs were being sold in the parking lot on Monday 5 May.

Barbara Patrick, the manager of the Kloof and Highway SPCA, confirmed that an inspector had reported to the scene where Westville SAPS had encountered two men who were attempting to sell Greyhounds that were believed to be stolen.

Patrick reported that an investigation revealed that one of the men was indeed the owner of the dogs. The inspector also completed a full inspection of the man’s home and property, but no indication of animal cruelty was found.

“The animals were all in good condition. The SPCA had no reason to confiscate the animals and they were returned to the owner,” said Patrick.

Stephen Clark, of the Westville SAPS, confirmed that they had called out the SPCA during after they had come across suspicious individuals. “It is a routine process. When it is suspected that an animal is being neglected or abused the SAPS calls out the SPCA. They have the necessary facilities to look after the animals and the experience with regards to animal abuse. If a criminal charge is opened then the police will investigate. The SAPS and the SPCA work hand in hand on such cases,” said Clark.
