Whoonga addict tries to hawk baby

A man was arrested for trying to sell his baby on the street.

A man who allegedly tried to sell his child for R2000 to buy drugs was arrested in Durban on Saturday.

According to media reports the 20-year-old father, who is also alleged to be a whoonga addict, was arrested by Montclair police after he and his brother were spotted trying to sell his 18-day-old infant to random couples on the street in Clairwood.

Reports suggest the baby was being looked after by a ‘Good Samaritan’ in Rossburgh after the baby’s mother was arrested on drug-related charges.

The baby’s father is alleged to have picked up the baby from the temporary care-giver with the intention to sell the infant for drug money.

According to reports, the baby was badly dehydrated and looked pale.

The man and his brother were both arrested after a taxi driver saw what they were up to and called the police.

Both men appeared in court on Monday and have been remanded in custody. The baby has since been put in a place of safety on the Bluff.

Whoonga, a highly addictive mixture of heroin, dagga, and rat poison, and in some reports, anti-retrovirals (ARVS), has become a major problem in KwaZulu-Natal.
