Clermont group threatens to boycott vote

Clermont Landowners Association members said they will make Clermont ungovernable if their grievances are not taken into account.

THE Clermont Landowners Association members has made a decision not to vote in the national elections this coming Wednesday if their grievances are not taken seriously.

This comes after a members of the group handed over a memorandum to the Mayor’s adviser, Joe Nene at a 2012 march.

Chairman of the association, Senzo Khuzwayo said since that day they have not received straight answers from the municipality.

“Clermont is not part of the eThekwini Municipality, it has always been governed by the residents.

“Clermont was handed over to the landowners by Mr Fennin after the World War 2. eThekwini Municipality took over after 1994. Previously we reported straight to the old government and paid our bills directly to Umngeni and Eskom.

“Ever since the municipality took over Clermont, the rates, water and electricity bills have gone up, we need to know how they calculate these bills.”

Khuzwayo said it not possible that one household could end up with a bill of R45 000.

The association once asked about the standpipes that are all over Clermont.

“We do not know who pays for those standpipes, lots of water is wasted because of those standpipes as they have turned into car washes.

They have also included in their memorandum that they will stop paying their rates, water and electricity bill if they do not to get to see the Mayor.

“What really irritates us is that the municipality does not inform us about any developments that are happening in the area,” said Khuzwayo.
