Zille vows to tackle crime

DA leader stops by Cowies Hill during her campaign trail.

DEMOCRATIC Alliance (DA) leader, Helen Zille, addressed the public at Cowie’s Hill Community Hall on Saturday 5 April.

Zille spoke about the DA’s manifesto as well as some of the primary issues South African citizens face on a daily basis. The two primary topics she discussed involved crime and government corruption.

Zille said, “If we governed nationally, we would pick the right people to be in the police force. I have learned in my various executive roles and management roles that your most important job of work is to put the right people in the right positions.”

She also said that the DA would employ an additional 250 000 police officers, that are well trained and well focussed.

The DA is also committed to reinstate specialised police units, such as the Scorpions. “They were rather good at corruption busting, but it was rather too good of a job and when they homed in on various corrupt politicians they were scrapped,” said Zille.

Detectives are another important section that Zille said the DA would focus on. “If you want to beat crime there is only one way to do it, instilling the knowledge in potential and actual criminals that if they commit a crime, they will be caught and the evidence will be brought to court and they will be prosecuted, and if they are guilty they will be convicted and sentenced to jail. That is the best deterrent. The conviction rate in South Africa is so low that criminals often make the assumption, which is often correct, that they are likely to get away,” said Zille.

Additionally, Zille also said that the DA would ensure that the SAPS had forensic and technological backing to assist them with ensuring convictions.
