Hicks fulfil sacred vows

Errol and Kay Hicks believe their faith in God and daily prayer for guidance and strength helped them reach their golden anniversary.

HILLCREST residents, Errol and Kay Hicks celebrated five decades of marriage last Friday.

The couple, formerly from Johannesburg met at the Old Jed’s seven-a-side rugby tournament. After the rugby matches, they attended a dance, and that’s when Errol asked Kay to dance with him. They said they didn’t court for a year, as they were always unavailable to meet, but one day Kay said yes when Errol asked her out, and as they say the rest is history.

They were married at the Forest Town Methodist Church in Johannesburg on 28 March 1964.

The couple recalled their marvellous honeymoon, flying to Durban, sailing in the Transvaal Castle to Cape Town and after a week travelling back to Johannesburg by train.

“We had a good life together. Sure, we had our ups and downs as most couples do, but we made it,” said Kay.

She said they both believe that if you take a solemn vow in church, before God, your family and friends, it is much easier to stick to your commitment to your spouse, when you’re going through a tough time for any reason.

“Then if you hold on firmly to your faith, pray to God for guidance and strength, you will get through,” said Kay.

She also added that they are fortunate in that they both go to church together and agree in most things. However, if they do disagree, and Kay does not feel too strongly about the issue, she asks herself, “Will the world stop turning if we do it his way?” And of course, her answer is always no.

Errol said they have three children, Janine, Gordon and Chris and are now blessed with six good-looking grandchildren. They are now enjoying their retirement at Le Domaine in Hillcrest. They learnt to play bowls, Errol still plays tennis and Kay plays canasta and bridge. They often go to pottery, pilates and aqua classes and lead a busy but happy life together.

The couple celebrated their special day with a week getaway to Johannesburg.
