Missing woman found dead

The body of Gillian Westman was found in Assagay this morning, 10 days after she was reported missing.

GILLIAN Westman (49), a Hillcrest resident, was found dead in a sugarcane plantation in Assagay this morning, after being reported missing 10 days ago.

Westman’s body was found on Cliffdale Road (behind the Polo Pony Club) at approximately 7am on Wednesday by local residents working in the plantation. Cnst Kwanele Gumede, of the Shongweni K9 Unit, was the first official on scene.

According to the missing person’s report, she disappeared on 12 March, after she left her home for a meeting and never returned home. Various social media have been bombarded with broadcast messages and posts of her missing person’s report in an attempt to locate her.

Her bother-in-law, Anthony Westman, told the Highway Mail that the family was devastated by the news of her death. “It is a traumatic time for everyone who knew her. Her two daughters, Sasha (20) and Hanna (17), are especially distressed and in shock,” said Antony.

He also reported that Gillian had a troubled childhood and had suffered a lot of traumatic events in her life. “She was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder, but had recently improved. After Christmas, however, her condition slowly declined,” said Anthony.

“She was a bright light of a person; willing to help anyone in need. We will miss her deeply,” he said.

Andrew also reported that Gillian was a passionate animal lover, and would rescue stray animals and find them safe homes. “In addition to her children she loved animals, especially horses. She would take every opportunity to ride,” said Anthony.

Gillian was well known within the Shongweni and Hillcrest area, as well as within the horse riding community.

Hillcrest SAPS are investigating the incident, but initial evidence suggested that no foul play was involved.
