Coco presents his brood

Coco, the adventurous macaw from Gillitts, and his mate Kelly successfully hatched their eggs.

GILLITTS residents Debbie and Iain Hill were thrilled to announce that Coco, the macaw that flew the coop in January, and his mate Kelly, have successfully hatched two baby macaws.

The Hills were panic-stricken in early January when Coco escaped from his enclosure and was missing for nearly a week. After several attempts from residents in the Upper Highway area, Coco was caught and returned home.

“We were worried for both Coco and Kelly. It was raining a lot during the time that Coco was missing, so we were scared that he would not survive the elements. Kelly was also incubating her eggs at that time. It is Coco’s responsibility to feed her while she is on the eggs, so we feared that she would die of dehydration or hunger,” said Kelly.

Luckily, Coco was found and has not attempted another daring escape. “He has definitely learned his lesson, and has not gone anywhere near the hole he chewed in his enclosure,” said Debbie.

The little macaws are currently four weeks old and their colourful plumes have only just begun to show. Debbie and Iain have taken the baby macaws out of the enclosure and will begin hand rearing them to tame them.

“It is such a miracle that they have hatched under these extra ordinary circumstances. We thought that they might not hatch, so when Iain came in one morning and told me that one of the eggs had hatched, he was like a proud father,” said Debbie.

This is Kelly and Coco’s first brood.
