Hillcrest Rotary focuses on computer literacy

Hillcrest Primary School's computer centre gets revamped.

THE Rotary Club of Hillcrest recently upgraded the computer centre at the Hillcrest Primary School, with items to the value of R50 000.

The upgrade included 30 new flat screen monitors, 30 headphones and 10 central processor units (CPU’s).

In 2009, the Rotary Club established the computer centre to enable pupils to develop their computer skills. Before the centre was established the pupils had no access to computers while at school.

The initial setup included 30 keyboards, CPU’s and monitors, as well as a printer.

“It was gratifying to receive feedback and to find out that the utilisation of the computer centre has improved the pupils’ computer skills,” said Hillcrest Rotarian, Dennis Wesley.

Sally Chapman, the headmaster at Hillcrest Primary School reported that the centre has been a tremendous success and that it has been heavily used by the pupils.

“As a community school we need and appreciate the support from organisations such as the Hillcrest Rotary Club. The computer centre has been an absolute buzz, and it has enabled the pupils to become familiar and confident with regards to using computers,” said Chapman.

According to Wesley, the project is a reciprocal partnership and Hillcrest Primary School will help uplift teachers from disadvantaged communities.
