KEARSNEY College enjoyed another action-packed weekend of school sports.

Kearsney’s cricket season ended on a high, with the 1st X1 beating St Charles by six wickets at home on the Smith Oval.

Batting highlights for St Charles 1st X1: 200/5 (Ortman 76, De Rouville 53) and Kearsney 1st X1: 201/4 (Foss 96, T Tedder 42 n.o., Pau 39). Kearsney won by six wickets.

On the basketball court, Kearsney 1st team finished with their best season recorded in the College’s history with 15 wins and 2 losses. Coach, Myles Delport, gave credit to the players who worked hard this season and never gave up, even when the odds were stacked against them.

In their last basketball match of the season, Kearsney hosted St Charles College, with both teams looking tired and flat after having participated in the St Johns basketball festival over half term.

St Charles dominated the opening encounter of the game, managing to put the ball in the basket more times than their hosts. The Kearsney team was not able to find the mark on most of their shots in the first half and found themselves down by 10 points just before half time.

The tide began to turn when substitute Myles Lundall came on and scored eight quick points to give Kearsney some momentum, which seemed to spark the team to life.

Kearsney then took control of the match and out played St Charles for the rest of the game, to win it by a comfortable 13 point margin 50-37.

The Kearsney team participated in the St Johns basketball tournament in Johannesburg over half term, which has grown into the biggest school basketball tournament in South Africa with 32 schools participating from around South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Kearsney placed third out of 32 schools. Morena Malakona was chosen as one of the 10 tournament All Stars.

Kearsney had a good weekend in the water (waterpolo) against St Charles. Its 1st team beat St Charles 13-3. Kearsney 2nd team beat St Charles 19-0. Kearsney 3rd team beat St Charles 5–0 and Kearsney U15A team beat St Charles 14-0.

In squash news, Kearsney College’s top eight had four matches each against Glenwood and lost 12-15. The U16A won 4-0 and the U14A won 4-0.

In rugby news, Kearsney 1st XV beat Voortrekker 1st VX 29-3 in a game played on Friday 28 February.
