Shongweni bus crash under investigation

A team of investigators has been assigned to probe a fatal bus accident in Shongweni.

THE Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has assigned a team of investigators to probe an accident in Shongweni which killed two teenage girls  on Saturday, according to RTMC spokeswoman Thato Mosena.

This comes after a bus overturned on Cassier Road in Shongweni on Saturday morning, killing the teenage girls and injuring 72 people.  The teenagers are suspected to have succumbed to spinal injuries as their bodies revealed no evidence of external injuries.

ER24 paramedics along with other emergency service personnel treated the rest of the bus occupants, all girls between the age of 14 and 16, who sustained injuries ranging from moderate to minor. They were thereafter transported to various hospitals in the area.

The elderly male driver sustained minor injuries.

The circumstances leading to this collision are unclear but ER24 was told that the 80-seater bus lost control as it was moving up the road from Shongweni township towards Hillcrest.

No other vehicles were involved.
