Conservation couple receives Green Hero award

The Highway Branch of WESSA presented Alan and Jean Job with this month's Green Hero award.

HIGHWAY Branch of Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA) presented the Green Hero award to two modest people, Alan and Jean Job, who have, during the past 40 years dedicated their time voluntarily to conservation.

According to Jean Lindsay, a member of WESSA, Alan and Jean Job’s voluntary work has seldom been appreciated because it is always done low key, never taking much credit – they just got the job done.

“In order to raise funds for environmental education they tackled with great tenacity the job of holding book sales. They have sorted thousands of books for years in a garage piled high with boxes of books and set up tables for four hours on many a Saturday morning. Due to their efforts hundreds of primary school children from the Highway area have visited Treasure Beach, where while having fun they have learned about eco-systems and coastal conservation,” said Lindsay.

Alan has been the chairman of the Highway Branch of WESSA for more than 40 years. In a gentlemanly way he has kept the branch going and raised large amounts of money for environmental education. Alan and Jean over the years have organised unforgettable weekends away into KZN reserves, Christmas dinners and day excursions to local reserves.

Alan has been the chairman of the Ron Senogles Fund since its inception in 1995. He has been the driving force behind this fund and has helped build the fund. This fund has sponsored worthy recipients involved in conservation projects in KZN.

More recently Highway Branch of WESSA has joined the Kloof Conservancy in resurrecting the Glenholme Nature Reserve by pledging a generous donation.

“We acknowledge Alan and Jean Job’s contribution to conservation. Two most deserving people who embody Highway’s motto of “Every day, in some way, you can make a difference’,” added Lindsay.
