Kearsney and Hilton in sports showdown

Kearsney College beat Hilton College in basketball and tennis but lost in cricket, waterpolo and squash.

KEARSNEY College faced off against Hilton College in five different sports at the weekend.

In basketball news, Kearsney’s 1st team travelled to the Midlands for the weekend’s fixture play against Hilton College’s 1st team.

The first quarter of the game saw Hilton having no answer to Kearsney’s tough man-to-man defence, not being able to score a single basket. Kearsney also struggled to adapt to the Hilton court and missed numerous shots at the basket and were not able to convert on the plethora of possession that they received during the quarter.

Hilton scored their first basket in the second quarter and began to claw their way back into the game. Kearsney however changed their defence to a full court press and were able to effect a number of turnovers which allowed them to score some easy baskets.

Hilton continued to struggle manfully however, but they did not have an answer to Kearsney’s defensive pressure and Kearsney ran out with an easy win, with the score 72-31. Top Kearsney scorers were Langalihle Mhlongo (20 points), Morena Malakona (18), Jeremy Maarschalk (16) and Albert Ojo (13). Hilton’s top scorers were Capes (12 points), Meyer (8) and Gouws (7).

In cricket news, Hilton College 1st X1 beat Kearsney 1st X1 by eight wickets. The final scores were Kearsney 158 all out (Smith 48, Tedder 43) and Hilton 161/2.

Hilton 1st team beat Kearsney 1st team 9-3 in water polo.

Kearsney 1st team beat Hilton 1st team 6-1 in tennis, and Kearsney’s 2nd team beat Hilton 1st team 6-0.

Hilton 1st team beat Kearsney 1st team 6-2 in squash.

In canoeing news, Kearsney College’s Peter Hudson finished 2nd and Keagan Loader sixth in the U18B final. In the team relay, Kearsney finished third, behind Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse.
