Colonel honoured for 40 years of service

Westville SAPS Colonel celebrates 40 years of service.

HIGHWAY councillors Tim Brauteseth and Warren Burne recently attended the Westville CPF meeting where they delivered a special congratulatory message to Col Tommy Stewart, who celebrated over 40 years of service in the SAPS.

Originally from Cape Town, he was immediately packed off to police college in Durban. Subsequently, he joined the force in 1973 at the age of 17.

After completing his training, he served in the elite State Presidents Guards for former State President Diedericks.

In 1979, he became an instructor and trained over 100 000 SAPS members in the Reaction Unit on various aspects of counter intelligence, with special emphasis on the detection of explosive devices and foreign arms and ammunition.

Two decades later Stewart joined the ranks of the Provincial Commissioner’s office as the Chief Sport officer and also served in the SAPS Emergency Service unit. During this time he served and worked with all current and past Provincial Commissioners.

In 2010, Stewart was posted to his current station, the Westville Police Station.

When asked to mention any career highlight, Stewart said his entire career was a highlight to him. “I wake up every morning with joy in my heart and a spring in my step. I attribute this to my health and positive attitude. I really enjoy making a difference in the lives of those I engage with,” said Stewart.

Stewart also took the time during the auspicious moment to pay particular tribute to his wife, Martha Stewart, who had supported him over the years. “Martha has been my rock and best friend. Nothing would be possible without her support,” said Stewart.

He is due to retire in 16 month’s time, but plans to remain engaged in community initiatives with the hope of creating a better and safer place.

Brauteseth and Burne praised Stewart for his loyalty and dedication. “In this day and age, it is rare for anything to last for over 40 years. It is a remarkable achievement and we both praise and commend this loyal servant of the community. We wish him well in the final stretch of a remarkable career,” said Brauteseth.
