Robberies still a concern in Pinetown CBD

Motorists are encouraged to be vigilant when driving in the Pinetown CBD.

PINETOWN police are concerned about the spate of robbery cases that were reported at the Pinetown police station by victims who were allegedly robbed at certain intersections in the Pinetown CBD.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer Lt Bongumusa Manqele, several men were arrested and prosecuted for these cases.

“We have police members in uniform and plain clothes patrolling the city centre trying to curb these cases but we are still receiving cases of robberies. The problematic streets are Old Main and Anderson, Old Main and Glenugie, Old Main and Crompton,” said Lt Manqele.

“In a recent incident on Saturday 11 January a couple was robbed of their cell phones, cash and iPod while waiting for a robot to turn green at the corner of Old Main and Anderson streets,” he said.

The items that are targeted by these criminals are cell phones, jewellery and cash.

“We are appealing to the public to be vigilant when crossing these intersections and motorists should close their windows and lock the doors. We also believe that these criminals are known and we appeal to the public to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 if they have any information that could assist the police,” said Lt Manqele.
