Hillcrest family robbed at gun point

Six robbers broke into a Hillcrest home and stole approximitely R230 000 worth of items.

A HILLCREST family was robbed at gunpoint after a gang of robbers broke into their Park Close home at 12pm on Wednesday 8 January.

According to Lt France Mkhize, of Hillcrest SAPS, six armed men wearing balaclavas kicked the front door open and held the family at gunpoint as they ransacked the home. They managed to steal about R235 000 worth of items from the house.

“The victim reported that he, his wife and daughter ran to the bedroom and locked themselves in the en-suite bathroom, but once the robbers had broken down the front door they found them in the bathroom and broke down the bathroom door as well,” said Lt Mkhize.

The family was dragged to the kitchen. One of the robbers stood guard over the family while the others looted the home. It was also reported that another daughter locked herself in a separate bathroom, that the robbers were never aware of her.

Steven King, of Waterfall Crime Watch also reported that the wife noticed the robbers climbing over the fence before they broke down the door. “The wife screamed out of the window, this alerted the neighbour who pushed his emergency button. SAPS, Enforce and Secure Link responded immediately,” said King.

“This is a highly organised and well trained unit. They are disciplined and calm. From the information that I have received these criminals operate mainly in the upper highway area,” said King.

Lt Mkhize said, “The robbers jumped the fence and loaded a flat-screen television, a Playstation, cell phones and jewellery into a vehicle before they fled the scene.”

The robbers fled towards Stonewall Road in a champagne coloured Audi Q7. SAPS gave chase, but the robbers managed to evade them.
