Hit team will keep beachfront clean

The city has special teams in place to keep the beachfront clean of litter over the festive period. Durban Solid Waste staff will all work over the festive period to keep refuse collections stable.

BEACH maintenance is on track as Durban Solid Waste (DSW) staff are working tirelessly to ensure that the area is litter free during the festive season.

To assist staff on duty it is requested that receptacles that are provided for the disposal of litter be used by visitors. This will ensure a clean environment which is for the enjoyment of all.  An additional 50 seasonal temporary staff have been employed over the festive season. All supervisors deployed on the Beachfront have previously worked peak periods and are fully aware of the standards required and the problem areas. The area will be maintained by two shifts, providing a 18 hour service (06h00 – 23h30). Provision has been made to overlap shifts should the need arise.

A mobile “hit team” has been deployed on the beachfront to attend to urgent complaints and they will be on site daily from 07h00 to 16h00. Mechanical sweeping will be undertaken on the Lower Marine Parade, Country Club and Blue Lagoon areas daily commencing at 04h30. Street sweeping will be carried out as and when required. The area is also swept by a private contractor employed by DSW who will be on site from 05h30 to 21h00 daily and is supervised by DSW staff.

Meanwhile, DSW operational services will continue as normal during the festive season including the public holidays. Residents are urged to put out their refuse as early as possible. DSW offices will be closed on the 25th and 26th December 2013 and 1st January 2014 but the operational staff will be on duty throughout the festive season.  For enquiries contact DSW help line on 031-311-8804.

Households in the far South, South Central, Durban Central, Chatsworth and Inner West will not receive an orange bag collection service on the 25th December 2013 and 1st January 2014. Residents are advised to keep the bags in their premises and put it out on the next collection day. For additional bags residents can purchase them from the civic centres during normal office hours, alternatively they can purchase them from the retail outlets such as Pick and Pay, Checkers etc.
