Beaches draw thousands of fun-seekers

Hundreds of thousands of people are enjoying east coast beaches.

TRAFFIC volumes heading to the coast are increasing as hundreds of thousands holidaymakers make their way to holiday destinations for Christmas. According to transport authorities, major highways have recorded around 2000 vehicles an hour.

In Durban, holidays are in full swing with an estimated 238 000  heading for east coach beaches to enjoy the sunshine.  Christo Swart, chairperson of eThekwini’s Festive Season Management Committee,  said beaches open from 6am but warned people not to go swimming until lifeguards were on duty. He said so far, safety teams had dealt with two near drownings and 33 rescue call outs.  He also urged people to heed the requests to leave the water at night when told to do so.

“We want to make sure you enjoy your stay in Durban,” he said. Swart added that more than 43000 wristbands had been issued to children over the past two weeks and was happy to announced that all children who had been separated from their parents had been reunited with them.
