Mourners gather at Fields Hill tragedy memorial

A memorial service was held at KwaNdengezi Sport Field for the 22 people killed in the Fields Hill accident last Thursday.

THOUSANDS of people filled the KwaNdengezi Sport Field to remember the 22 people killed in the Fields Hill accident last Thursday.

Families of the deceased sat in sorrow as they continued to try to come in terms with the tragedy.

Representatives from the Road Accident Fund, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) as well as eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo, MEC for the Department of Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison Willies Mchunu and other members of parliament were also at the memorial service.

SANTACO pledged 60 taxis to be used to transport people to the funerals on Saturday and Sunday and the Road Accident fund promised to speed up the processes so that the families of the victims can be able to live comfortable after this tragedy.

Nxumalo started by apologising for the small tent that was set up at the sport field as hundreds of people ended up sitting outside.

“This accident really shocked the nation and as the municipality we are very grateful to the people who came forward and assisted.

“Accidents have happen in KZN but this one is by far the most tragic of them all,” he said.

Nxumalo expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.

“No driver would have been able to avoid that truck as it was in the afternoon and there was traffic,” said Nxumalo.

Nondumiso Mkhize who lost her friend in this accident said she is still very shocked as she almost got into one of the taxis that were involved in the accident.

“I was coming from work and when I got to the rank the taxi was missing one person and somebody got in before me.

“I am very thankful to God for saving me but my heart still bleeds for my friend Smangele Shabangu (24). I miss her very much,” she said.
