Foyer gets a revamp

Westville Boys' High School celebrated the launch of its new foyer at a cocktail party.

THE entrance foyer at Westville Boys’ High School underwent a massive transformation during the three-week mid-year vacation, thanks to the generous financial contributions of several members of the Westville Old Boys’ Club.

The foyer building has a significant place in the history of the school, having served as the school hall during the early days of the co-educational Westville High School in the 1960s.

The site was converted into an administration/reception foyer following the construction of a new hall in 1965, and although cosmetic changes occurred at irregular intervals thereafter, it has not been until now that the foyer has been completely revamped into a modern, bright and welcoming facility.

The dream became a reality on 31 May this year, when past pupils attending the Westville Old Boys Reunion Dinner adopted the idea of revamping the well-used, but outdated, school foyer.

In true Westville style, the WOBs took hold of the dream and, within a few weeks, the funds rolled in quickly enough to ensure the project was started and completed during the three-week school holidays, with minimal disruption to school activities.

Interior designer Bianca Shaw of Slinx Interiors project-managed the alterations and secured the furnishings. She deserves the utmost credit for her vision and expertise in making optimum use of the existing space which now includes a new reception area, two interview rooms, repositioned offices and broad, flowing passages.

She was well supported by architect Jack Dommisse and renowned local artist Julie Mayo who produced superb artworks of two of the school’s current high performing sports teams which are now a distinctive feature of the entrance area.

The official opening of the new foyer took place at the school in the form of a cocktail party on 23 August, in the presence of donors and sponsors, and members of the Griffin Supporters’ Club and Old Boys’ Association.
