Kearsney hosts choral music extravaganza

A great line up of choral music is planned for September at Kearsney College.

LOVERS of vibrant choral music are in for a feast next month with a series of concerts and choir performances at Kearsney College.

This Sunday 1 September the University of Johannesburg Choir will perform together with the international award-winning Kearsney College Choir. The Johannesburg singers’ programme represents the exciting colours and sounds of the City of Gold – a fine Western repertoire combined with the full blooded rhythm of African music.

The Concert in the Chapel will start at 3pm. Tickets will be on sale at the door at a cost of R30 each and refreshments will also be available.

Later in the month, primary and high school choirs from Durban and Pietermaritzburg will take part in the inaugural Culture@Kearsney Choir Festival, a platform for schools to showcase their choral skills in a relaxed evening to be enjoyed by both audiences and performers.

Participating primary schools Highbury, Westville Senior Primary, HCA, Vusukukhanya and Ethembeni will perform on Tuesday 10 September, with high school choirs from St Mary’s, Danville, Hillcrest and Voortrekker in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday 12 September. Kearsney’s choir will end both nights with a short programme.

It is hoped the Choir Festival will create opportunities for schools, students and choir directors to showcase their talent and learn from each other. In the future, a series of workshops for participating choirs are planned, to share musical knowledge and possibly present combined numbers.

The primary and high schools evenings will take place in the Henderson Hall at Kearsney, starting at 7pm. Entry is free and refreshments will be available.
