Hillcrest High boffins bring home the gold

Hillcrest High School pupils went for gold at the recent Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

FIVE Hillcrest High School pupils picked up gold medals at the annual Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, where they showcased their own scientific investigations.

A total of 314 pupils took part in this year’s expo, which took place at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Shanice Singh project was named Geothermal versus Conventional Energy, which looked at the advantages of geothermal energy versus fossil fuels and won best female Eskom energy project.

Joshua Coetzer’s project, Particulate Pollution Solution, investigated which method, plants or air filters, worked best to purify the air indoors. This is Joshua’s second gold medal, as he won best in category at a national level last year for his project on using lichens in different areas as an indicator of air purity.

Mlando Sikhosana-Khoza The Psychology of Primary Colours investigated whether a specific primary colour would cause us to memorize work better.

Julia Schauerte and Shannon Olivier, who also won best in the category of health care and sports science, named their project Which School Shoe Is Best? The investigation led them to find which type of school shoe was most comfortable, hygienic and had the best grip.

The organisers will now choose which of the gold medalists will take their projects through to the national round.
