Robbers turn heel and run

A pair of robbers got a nasty surprise when they tried to rob an Assagay home

A PAIR of robbers were forced to flee the scene of their crime when they were thwarted by a sharp-eyed gardener in Assagay on Thursday.

According to Hillcrest SAPS communication officer Lt Justice Mhkize, the gardener picked up a brick when he spotted an intruder jumping over the fence onto the property.

He claims to have confronted the intruder, who fled after the gardener hit him in then back of the head with the brick. It was at this point when the domestic worker emerged from the house, screaming there was a second intruder inside the house. That intruder also fled the scene when he was attacked by the homeowner’s dogs, but not before spraying the dogs with pepper spray. The two intruders managed to escape with a DVD player and a cell phone. They dropped the cell phone as they fled the scene and it was recovered by the police.

Lt Mhkize said that the gardener and domestic worker reported that the intruders had not been not armed, although the domestic worker told the SAPS the intruder who’d been inside the home had held a kitchen fork as a weapon at one point.

Social media posts have reported that one of the intruders targeted the home on a previous occasion and managed to stab the owner, but Lt Mhkize could not confirm this allegation.
