Councillors take stock of rural areas

Residents hope their concerns over infrastructure will be addressed.

LOCAL councillors Tim Brauteseth and Warren Burne have embarked on regular oversight tours in forgotten areas of KwaDabeka, Clermont and Chesterville.

The first phase took place recently in KwaDabeka where local residents engaged with Brauteseth and Burne over issues such as storm water and sewerage drainage, housing and toilets.

The visit also included the Lindela Transit camp on the banks on the uMngeni River.

According to Brauteseth the camp has more than 400 housing units was established more than five years ago. Despite this, there is still no electricity supply to the residents.

As a result, there are several illegal and dangerous unearthed cables, often within a few metres of where children play on a regular basis.

“Another major issue is one of drainage. It obvious that when the camp was established, drainage channels were dug. Since then, all of the channels have filled with sand which has led to major flooding of units and general erosion where flood water has scoured the new channel,” added Brauteseth.

He plans to engage officials with a view to fixing these and other problems in these areas.
