Malvern’s Mesharen aces mini series

Mesharen was in action at the KZN trials recently. He will also be playing in the Junior Nationals in Bloemfontein this April.

MALVERN resident, Mesharen Govender, recently became the U14 winner of the KZN Dunlop Tennis Mini Series beating Caleb Fyvie in the final 5-7, 6-3 and 10-7.

The 13-year-old champ practices with the Ridley Park Tennis Club.

Last year, while at Parkside Primary School, he achieved his KZN colours and with his high ranking it has enabled him to receive a tennis scholarship this year at Westville Boys’ High.

His coach, Ugan Pillay, has trained him from the age of eight and said he is a natural athlete and because he plays with lots of flair, he knows he has to work even harder at his game.

“He reached a few quarters and semi’s previously and it’s really great for him to win his first tournament which will give him the confidence to push on and achieve even more,” said Pillay.

He also plays in the eThekwini Men’s League for Ridley Park Tennis Club along with some of the club’s other top juniors.

“The Ridley Park Tennis Club has birthed many of the province’s top juniors. The coaching programme, which is run by professional tennis coaches, is fun and exciting for all levels, from mini tennis, kids social lessons to advanced tournament players. Beginner lessons take place on Friday’s and Saturdays. There is also adult social tennis as well as a ladies morning group,” said Pillay.
