THE Highway Shellhole hosted a memorial service and parade at Le Domaine to commemorate the start of World War 1 and for the men who died at the battle of Delville Wood.

The group of men marched into the hall with the man playing the bag pipes in the lead while another held the Shellhole’s flag high.

The moving ceremony began with an opening prayer and a hymn. The horrific Battle for Delville Wood was then recounted by Lt Col Mick Mckenna and the MOTH credo was recited.

“The Battle for Delville Wood was a particularly nasty battle where many South African men lost their lives. Their tenacity and bravery was enough to ensure that the alliance kept the ground that it had claimed during the war. As MOTHs we have sworn to remember the thousands of brave men who gave their lives. The first World War changed the world forever,” said Roy Gardener of the Highway Shellhole.
