Glenholme revamp continues

NPO's urge Highway residents and organisations to assist them with returning Glenholme Nature Reserve to its former glory.

WESSA, the Kloof and Highway SPCA and the Kloof Conservancy have joined their efforts with the hope of restoring the Glenholme Nature Reserve to its former glory.

Before the reserve was reopened last year the organisations had already put a lot of effort into improving the reserve. Paths had been re-cut and two of the bridges were rebuilt. Despite all the hard work and effort a section of the reserve has remained closed, as the bridge in that section was deemed unsafe and therefore in need of urgent repairs.

Over the years the wood began to rot extensively. Effectively, many planks are missing and sections of the bridge have collapsed.

“In the 1980s invasive alien plants were removed from the reserve, and pathways, ladders, walkways as well as bridges were built. On completion the reserve was handed back to the SPCA. Time, lack of funds and a heavy work demand took its toll on the reserve,” said Alan Job, the chairman of the Highway branch of WESSA.

The NPO’s are appealing to Highway organisations and residents to donate materials or assist to repair the bridge. “A survey conducted by the Highway branch of WESSA revealed that a diversity of rare and endangered fauna and flora can be found in the reserve. We hope that the restoration of the reserve will enable residents to enjoy these wonders once again,” said Job.

The reserve currently open and residents are invited to join the next guided walk, which will be held on Saturday 8 February starting at 10am at the Tea Room at the SPCA.
